Cataract Surgery During cataract surgery, the patient is put into a twilight sleep. The surgeon creates a small incision and uses high-energy sound waves to break the cataract into microscopic particles, which are then removed from the eye. To compensate for the removal of the eye's natural lens, an intra-ocular lens (IOL) is implanted into the eye.
