Woman considering PRK surgery in SacramentoWhile LASIK is the most commonly discussed eye surgery, it is not the only option available. Photorefractive Keratectomy, also known as PRK, is an effective type of laser eye surgery that can help you achieve clear vision. If LASIK is not a perfect fit for your unique needs, you may consider PRK surgery.

What is PRK?

PRK is a type of laser eye surgery that is often performed as an alternative to LASIK. Like all laser vision correction surgery, PRK works by reshaping your cornea to correct refractive vision errors. However, PRK works on the surface of your cornea while LASIK works underneath. This surgery only removes a very small amount of tissue from the surface of the cornea instead of creating a corneal flap. The benefits of PRK surgery include that it:

  • Can treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism
  • Can eliminate the need for contacts and glasses
  • Offers an alternative for patients who may not be eligible for LASIK

When is PRK a Better Option Than LASIK?

PRK was the first type of laser eye surgery and has been around longer than LASIK. While LASIK has generally become more popular, there are still instances where PRK surgery may be a better option.

There are many factors that can prevent you from being an ideal LASIK candidate. However, those same factors may not affect your candidacy for PRK. At Griffin & Reed Eye Care, our experienced laser vision correction surgeons will help determine the best procedure for your unique eyes.

You may consider PRK over LASIK if you have:

  • Thin corneas
  • Dry eyes

Candidates for PRK

A detailed eye examination with our laser vision correction surgeons is the best way to determine your candidacy for PRK. Generally speaking, you may be an ideal candidate for PRK if you:

  • Are at least 18 years old
  • Have not experienced changes to your prescription in the last year
  • Have good general eye health
  • Are not prone to excessive scarring
  • Have realistic expectations for the surgery

Our surgeons understand that no two people have the same eyes or the same visual needs. That is why we take a comprehensive approach to evaluating the best treatment for you. This includes a thorough eye examination, as well a discussion of your lifestyle and your goals for the procedure. When it comes to something as important as your vision, you want to feel confident that you are choosing the right surgery.
