Dr. Douglas Brent Reed did not initially plan to become an ophthalmologist. During his third year of medical school, Dr. Reed assisted a VA eye surgeon in performing cataract surgery on an older gentleman. The next morning, the VA physician removed the bandage from the patient’s eye and his emotional reaction forever changed Dr. Reed’s life. He realized the full impact he could have on someone’s life through eye surgery.
