What is a LASIK Enhancement?

While researching LASIK, you’ve probably seen the term “LASIK enhancement.” A LASIK enhancement is a secondary LASIK procedure that is performed to improve your visual acuity if you didn’t quite achieve the desired outcome from your first procedure.

It is very rare for our blade-free, all-laser LASIK patients to need a touch-up procedure. In fact, you have a higher probability of getting the results you want at our facility than anywhere else. That is because we are passionate about treating our patients like family and we go above and beyond the normal LASIK standards to provide optimal outcomes.

The Chances of Needing Retreatment

The definition of a LASIK enhancement with Griffin & Reed Eye CareWhen patients first learn about the concept of enhancement, they naturally wonder if they will need a secondary LASIK procedure. At Griffin & Reed Eye Care, there is a 98% chance that you will achieve 20/20 vision — or no worse than 20/25 vision — with a single treatment.

Our retreatment patients (those who have a visual acuity of 20/30 or lower after their first surgery) make up less than 1% of the total patients that we see. In these rare situations, a person’s vision is better than it was before their procedure, but their results could be improved with a second LASIK session.

Will I Need LASIK More Than Once?

At other facilities, your LASIK results may vary depending on who performs your surgery and what equipment they use. Some surgeons still rely on the generic “plug and play” method of laser programming.

When a surgeon uses this method to treat patients with a prescription between +4.00 to –6.00 — the majority of LASIK patients tend to be in this range — there is usually a 65% to 75% chance that the patient will achieve 20/25 or better vision. That is significantly lower than what we can offer patients using our meticulously calculated, proprietary method of laser programming.

However, a LASIK enhancement procedure is nothing to be worried about, even in the unlikely that you end up wanting or needing a touch-up. In fact, the enhancement process is very similar to the original LASIK surgery.
