Awake During LASIKA common concern among potential LASIK patients is whether you will be awake during the surgery. When we talk to patients about this concern, we learn that there are some common fears underlying the question. Some of these fears stem from misconceptions or misunderstandings about the procedure. The more you know, the more confident you will feel about undergoing LASIK.

Yes, you will be awake during LASIK, but read on to find out why that shouldn’t worry you at all.

You Won’t Feel Pain

Many patients fear that being awake means that they will feel everything that is happening and that makes them squeamish when they think about eye surgery. Rest assured that you will feel nothing more than a light pressure on your eye if you feel anything at all.

You will be under a mild oral sedation, so although awake, you will feel relaxed. You will also receive numbing drops in each eye to prevent any eye discomfort during the procedure.

You Won’t Blink and Go Blind

Blinking during the procedure is a common fear among patients. You are afraid that you’ve picked a highly qualified surgeon with state-of-the-art equipment and that you will blink or turn your head and mess up the entire operation.

You can’t.

Your head will be stabilized for the procedure and a special retainer is used to prevent you from blinking during the short duration of the surgery.

LASIK Surgery Only Takes a Few Minutes

The word “surgery” often reminds our patients of long hours they have spent in waiting rooms waiting on news of a loved one’s invasive surgical procedure. LASIK is fast, efficient, and safe. You don’t have to worry about lying awake on the surgical table for hours on end.

On average, LASIK will take less than 10 minutes for each eye. The actual time the lasers are in contact with each eye is for merely seconds.
